In short, exercise therapy is step-by-step system that uses functional muscle assessments and a personalised protocol of corrective exercises to firstly determine if a client is in prime anatomical position and get them there if they aren't.
Prime anatomical position is the postural position that a person functions best from. The length-tension relationships in all the joints are healthy and the client is fully functional, meaning they can activate all their muscles properly and efficiently without any pain or discomfort.
Functional assessments use muscle testing to see if a client has the capacity to turn on or activate the muscles being tested. If someone cannot activate a muscle, chances are they are out of prime anatomical position.
Once we have the results of the muscle assessments a protocol of corrective exercises that will create immediate improvement for the client can be formulated.
Correctives protocols use a variety of modalities to get clients into prime anatomical position. Most healthcare and fitness professionals use only 1 modality, such as just mobility techniques, strength training, stretching, or fascial work. Exercise therapy uses a variety of modalities in the right dosages to get the best results. They involve mobility, soft tissue work, fascial work, stability, muscle activation and much more. If formulated correctly these protocols have potential to achieve a 20% or more improvement in range of motion, and decrease in pain or discomfort in under 10 minutes.
